Exterior Trim and Roof Colors

With the decision of window layout behind me, my focus now turns to exterior trim color, and it's partner, roof color.

Here are the exterior trim colors offered by Marvin windows - and I think they are extensive -- AND, they do custom colors.  I don't know how spendy those are though...

I think I have my roof colors narrowed down to the red that Jay used on his Gifford:

I'm also contemplating a steel roof that is clad in copper.  I'm still researching that - and I really need to make researching a priority this week - but the idea is that steel clad in copper is less expensive and more durable than straight copper.  And it would still patina naturally.

Add in that David wants to do stained glass porch lights in copper fixtures, and ... mmmm quite the draw.

I found this chart of the colors that copper turns over time as it patinas:

I'm totally in love with all of those... but, man, what color do I do the window trim, then?  Maybe just the same as the house color?

The bluish/purple roof on this Gifford is very pretty with the water as a back drop, but I worry that blue would wear on me over time.  I think I'd get tired of it - and on windows -- !  It would be too much for me.

So... my plan is to look into the cost of copper clad standing seam steel roofing material.

  1. Roofing can really be an overwhelming job, there's a lot of roof colors and styles to choose from. Steel roof and copper sounds like a great combination. Did you go for it? Anyway, I love the last photo. I always wanted a purple roof and seeing this gave me a sign to do it. :-) >Brook<

  2. Hey Brook!

Oh my gosh, yes, a ton of choices! I'm still gathering quotes and information, and also my construction logistics are changing up a bit. All of that to say, I haven't made a decision yet! I think I've determined that copper will cost me about $1,000 more than steel. But no decision yet....

Isn't that photo of the Gifford gorgeous? Be sure and send a photo of your house! I would love to see it. Are you building now? (Are you writing about it?)

Thank you so much for stopping by, and for commenting. Have a great day!

  3. Picking out exterior scheme can absolutely be complicated, even if you know, or at least have an idea of the colors you want. Anyhow, have you made the decision now? Regarding the copper roof, I believe you would love it either way with Patina. It is a great perk for a homeowner when natural weathering would only seem like you're dressing up your roof!

  4. Noreen,

Thanks for your comment! I've mostly decided to do the roof the colonial red, and the windows a corresponding color - wineberry, or colonial red, depending on the manufacturer.

That being said, I haven't totally let go of the copper idea. I know I am not doing full on copper, but I still want to research the copper clad steel. So far I haven't been successful in getting quotes for that - it seems to be elusive. And then I need to determine if steel clad copper will patina like full copper.

I ruled out pure copper due to copper theft. So many people said my roof would probably get stolen! I would be heartbroken. Plus, whoo wee copper was expensive, even for the tiny space I need to cover.

    Advice?

I'll be ready to roof in late July or early August.

    Thank you for stopping by!
